Personal Enrichment: Landscape Design for Homeowners

The University of Tulsa Division of Continuing Education Presents

Not sure what to do with that overgrown yard? This class will help you learn the basics of yard design and some sustainable design techniques that can be applied to the residential landscape. Students will learn about plants suitable to Oklahoma’s climate, how to capture and reuse rainwater, what to look for when selecting plants from a nursery, how to solve drainage problems, and basic maintenance techniques for their gardens in order to create plans for their own personal landscapes, with instructor collaboration. The class will be organized into Monday night lectures and in-class work sessions, as well as Saturday morning field trip opportunities.

Derek R. McCall, owner of the Tulsa-based DRM Design Group, has a broad range of experience resulting from working with Landscape Architecture firms in Chicago, Fort Lauderdale, Asheville, Austin, and Beijing, China. He graduated from Oklahoma State University with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture and has since worked on projects around the world, continually gaining inspiration from his travels. Derek has gained valuable experience working on residential, commercial, community, and resort projects from their initial planning stages to construction. His passion for plants, specifically native flora, was cultured while working at the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University. Derek believes that thoughtful use of local sustainable materials and low-impact development are keys to producing a project that fits well into the
surrounding environment. His core philosophy when designing is that simple, graceful designs should amplify, not lessen, the beauty of nature.
