The University of Tulsa Division of Continuing Education Presents

A working knowledge of still photography is essential in today’s image-saturated culture. From family albums and scrapbooks, to eBay sales and Facebook postings, photography helps illuminate the world around us, and allows us to enjoy recording moments in time. Come and explore the fantastic world of photographic images in a six-week introduction to digital photography, with an emphasis on creating photographs (though not on photographic software). The course will cover camera basics such as light, exposure, shutter speed, aperture, composition, field depth, and motion control. We will learn how to download images to a computer and back them up to alternate storage devices. A digital camera with manual settings is required for the course, and a single lens reflex (SLR) camera is preferred. In addition, please bring a USB interface cable to download your photographs to the class computers. NOTE: you will be exposed to the basics of Adobe Photoshop, but the course will emphasize creating photographs.

Photographer Robert Cross of the Gilcrease Museum has a BA in History from Colorado College and an MA in Journalism (with an emphasis in Photojournalism) from the University of Missouri. Cross worked as a photojournalist in Missouri, New Mexico, Colorado, Virginia, and North Carolina. Here in Oklahoma, Cross worked as a photojournalist, picture editor and web editor for the Tulsa World, and he has worked as an adjunct professor at the OSU Journalism Department from 1998-2009, teaching classes such as the Principles of Photojournalism, and Beginning Photography. Now Cross works as a photographer for the Gilcrease Museum, working on photographing art for books on the Gilcrease Collections, as well as for the biannual Gilcrease Journal and the Gilcrease Newsletter. He also photographs social and educational events at the museum.
