Homecoming 2013 Honored Traditions: Loyal, Always True

The University of Tulsa Alumni Association welcomed alumni and friends to campus over Homecoming weekend, held October 30 – November 3.

The University family kicked off the weekend by honoring the 2013 Distinguished Alumni with a reception at the Lorton Performance Center. Those honored as Distinguished Alumni included Henry (Hank) Haney (BS ’77); Judy Zarrow Kishner (BS ’74, JD ’77); Thomas H. Russell (BS ’57) and Lovie L. Smith (BS ’80). For more on Distinguished Alumni, visit www.TUAlumni.com/da. Pat and Don Hardin were honored as the 2013 J. Paschal Twyman Award recipients for outstanding contributions to the University and Pete Sandman, TU’s bursar, was honored as Mr. Homecoming 2013, which recognizes a TU employee who has exhibited outstanding service to the University and to the community. Ten students were selected as 2013 Jess Chouteau Outstanding Seniors.

On Friday evening after a day of activities, thousands of alumni, students, parents and friends gathered on Dietler Commons (formerly known as “The U”) for the annual Pep Rally and Bonfire, which included head football coach Bill Blankenship (BA ’79), Captain Cane, the TU Marching Band and a fireworks show. Following the Pep Rally over 300 alumni headed to Bar 46 in the Brady District for TU on Tap and the Lettermen’s Association hosted an All-Sports Reception at H. A. Chapman Stadium.

The next morning, members of the class of 1963 were welcomed into the Gold Medallion Society at a brunch held on campus. Saturday afternoon brought blue skies and perfect tailgating weather for the Official Homecoming Tent Party on Chapman Commons, where those in attendance enjoyed lunch, live music and inflatables for the kids.

Many other events were held over the weekend. Organizations and groups hosting reunions during Homecoming included the Class of 1988, Sigma Nu fraternity, Lottie Jane Mabee and John Mabee Hall residents from the 1970s and 1980s, Kappa Delta sorority, Spirit Squad, Tennis Alumni and TU Nursing.

At halftime during the TU football game against the UTSA Roadrunners, Jordan Hendrickson was named Homecoming Queen and Andrew Kresyman was named Homecoming King. To see the entire Homecoming Court, visit www.TUAlumni.com/court.

The weekend’s events were led by Homecoming Chairs, Sarah (BS ’78) and Jerry (BS ’78, ’80) Taylor and an energetic, devoted committee of volunteers comprised of alumni, staff, faculty and friends. The Alumni Association is grateful for their support and work to make Homecoming such an exciting event, year after year.
