TU History

The University of Tulsa traces its origins to the Presbyterian School for Indian Girls, founded in Muskogee in 1882. In 1894, the school became Henry Kendall College, named after the first general secretary of the Presbyterian Church’s Home Missions Board. Financial struggles led the college to relocate to Tulsa in 1907, following the city’s oil boom. In 1920, the college merged with plans for McFarlin College, becoming The University of Tulsa. By 1928, it became an independent institution. Today, TU is a top-rated, nondenominational research university that embraces students from diverse religious and cultural backgrounds.
