At the University of Tulsa, tradition is woven into the fabric of our identity, creating a deep sense of community that lasts well beyond graduation. Founded in 1894, TU's rich history has shaped a series of cherished traditions that bring students, alumni, and fans together. From the ringing of the bell to spirited athletic events, these timeless rituals foster a connection to the past while creating new memories for future generations.
The nickname Golden Hurricane was adopted in 1922 after Head Coach Acher inspired the team to vote on a new name. Originally known by several other names, including "Yellow Jackets" and "Tigers", the team embraced "Golden Hurricane" to symbolize strength and resilience - combining the power of a hurricane with the gold color of their new jerseys.
