2010 — Don Tomkalski
Home
Honors & Awards
Mr. or Ms. Homecoming
As an unofficial ambassador for The University of Tulsa, no one else has quite the global reach of Don Tomkalski. For the last 26 years, Tomkalski has served as director of athletic media relations, working daily with sportswriters and broadcasters who can reach millions around the world. He takes pride in providing accurate and timely information to the media, ensuring that journalists have a positive TU experience before, during, and after the game.
Tomkalski, known as “DT”, has given dedicated service to TU and Golden Hurricane athletics. Through his many 80-plus hour weeks, including 20-hour days during peak times, DT consistently highlights the accomplishments of student-athletes both on and off the field. Named associate athletic director for communication two years ago, Tomkalski oversees all marketing and communications for 18 varsity sports. He also supervises the Golden Hurricane cheer squads.
DT’s selection as 2010 Mr. Homecoming is a well-deserved honor, say his former and current colleagues.
“Don Tomkalski may be the hardest-working person I have had the pleasure to work with,” said TU Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham. “His ability to manage multiple tasks, multiple coaches and multiple personalities is remarkable.”
Dale McNamara, former TU women’s golf coach, noted: “He has always been there for the athletes. His sincerity and caring for these young people have always been amazing.”
Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Tomkalski has been a sports buff from an early age, including more than seven years as a ball boy for the Cleveland Cavaliers. After high school, he attended St. Thomas (Fla.) University in Miami, seeking warmer weather and a sports management degree, which he earned in 1983. After completing a six-month internship in the publicity office for the Detroit Pistons, he became sports information assistant at TU. Five months later, he was appointed sports information director, and he has filled that role ever since.
Homecoming is one of DT’s favorite TU events. “Homecoming has always been really special for me. It’s great to see these kids again and see how accomplished they are,” he said. “They have a great time seeing all the changes here at TU — the new athletic facilities and the campus in general.”
Tomkalski is quick to give credit for his professional success to the athletic department staff and his wife, Gary Ann, with whom he recently celebrated 19 years of marriage.
