Mentor FAQ

What is expected of me as a mentor?

The purpose of utulsa connect is to serve as a connection gateway between TU students and alumni. Rather than creating a formalized, traditional mentoring program that conflicts with the busy schedules of students and alumni, utulsa connect is an opt-in program that allows mentors and mentees to connect with each other as their time allows and when assistance is needed. There is no official time commitment for utulsa connect; the only requirement is that mentors respond to student requests in a timely manner.

How will a mentor match be made?

Once you register through utulsa connect, you will complete your profile by adding your professional background and headshot. TU students will then have a chance to review profiles to find a mentor who fits their interests and career goals. Once a student finds the ideal mentor, the student will send a message to request mentoring. You will receive a notification via email when a student messages you. You will then review mentoring request(s) and approve student(s) accordingly.

How many students can I mentor?

You are free to mentor as many students as your time allows, so long as you are responding to students' request(s) for help in a timely manner.

What if I receive more than one request for mentorship?

We hope you’ll accept as many mentees as you feel fit to mentor, but you do have the option to decline a student if you don’t have the time or do not think the fit is right.

What if I want to continue mentoring the student beyond the academic year?

Mentors are welcome to continue mentoring their students as long as they are willing and able. Mentoring relationships are also free to extend past a student's graduation, as mentoring is essential for young professionals entering the workforce.

Do I have to be in Tulsa to participate as a mentor?

You do not have to live in Tulsa to participate. You can connect with your student via phone, email or video conferencing and still be a great mentor.

How do I sign up to be a mentor?

To sign up, go to utulsaconnect.com and select the Join Now/Get Started/Start Networking button. We highly recommend signing up using LinkedIn, as it will automatically import your professional biography.

What if I don’t receive any requests for mentorship from students?

With a 1:3 student-to-mentor ratio, there is a chance that you will not receive a mentoring request right away. However, keeping your profile and headshot up-to-date, as well as ensuring you are registered under a primary email account, will help prepare you for when a student does send you a mentoring request.

Do you have any tips or best practices?

1. Set up an initial meeting to determine expectations, availability and methods of communication
2. Maintain regular contact with your mentee(s)  (at least once a month)
3. Be responsive and open to your mentee when they reach out for help or advice

What does first-generation mean?

A first-generation college student is defined as a student whose parent(s)/legal guardian(s) have not completed a bachelor's degree. This means that the student is the first in the family to attend a four-year college/university to attain a bachelor's degree.

Why do I keep receiving an error message when I am trying to update my profile?

You will receive an error message and your changes will not save when trying to update your profile if all of the required fields (fields with an “*”) are not complete. Please make sure you complete all the required fields first and then click save.

Which browser should I use to log into utulsa connect?

The preferred browser for utulsa connect is Google Chrome.

How will a mentor match be made?

Once you create your utulsa connect account, you use the directory to review mentor profiles and find a mentor who fits your interests and career goals. Once you find your ideal mentor, you will click on the profile and send a message to request mentorship. From there, the person will review the mentorship request(s) and approve student(s) accordingly.

Is there a limit to how many mentor requests I can send?

There is no limit. However, you must be willing to make the necessary time commitment that is agreed upon between you and your mentor(s).

I reached out to someone and did not receive a response. What should I do?

You should give mentors enough time to respond, typically 2-3 days. If you do not receive a response by then, please email the TU Office of Alumni Engagement at tualumni@utulsa.edu for assistance connecting with a prospective mentor.

Can I continue working with my mentor beyond the academic year?

You are welcome to stay connected with your mentor as long as they are willing and able to help.

Can I request a mentor who lives outside of Tulsa?

Mentors do not have to live in Tulsa to participate. You can connect with your mentor via phone, email or video conferencing and have a great connection.

Are the jobs posted under the Alumni Jobs section only for alumni?

Yes. Jobs posted on utulsaconnect.com are more suited for post-graduate individuals. If you are a current student or young alumni, please check Handshake for internship and job opportunities.
